It started in 1999, I was at a Yoga and Relaxation course when the Teacher called me over and said a remarkable thing “You have Healing Hands - you must do something about your Gift!”

 Quite frankly I was astonished. Why me? I am just a normal guy with a normal life, wife and pets, not to mention  a life in the commercial world.  Above all I am a regular churchgoer.  Help!

I did not know the first thing about Healing. Like many other people I thought that Spiritual Healers were wacky; had strange beliefs; worshipped strange idols; contacted dead people!
 
How wrong I was!  One of the first misconceptions stems from the phrase  “Spiritual Healer”.  In fact we heal the Spirit – we are not Spiritualists.

Healing is mentioned many times in the Bible and to my mind and many agree with this, the Greatest Healer of all was Jesus. I was in church one Sunday when the passage from St. Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians Ch 12 verse 9 was read out: “To another faith by the same Spirit: to  another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit”. I thought that’s me.  Mine is a Gift from God and the Holy Spirit.

So, if knew I had a Gift, how was I to learn to use it?

Well, I was frightened.  Firstly because of the many misconceptions and secondly because of the Church.   I could not go to the Vicar and say “ I am a healer, what can I do for you?”, without showing any inclination to become a Minister and then use the Gift under the aegis of the Church. 
 
By coincidence - or was it - I was browsing through a book shop when I chanced upon a guide to REIKI and I was drawn to it. After reading the first chapter, I was hooked and the search began for a Teacher.
 
What is REIKI?  It is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.  The word is derived from two Japanese words – REI which means “God’s wisdom or the Higher Power”  and KI which is “life force energy”. Reiki is not taught in the usual sense but is transferred to the student during a class by means of an attunement which in lay terms is an opening up into the “KI energy”.

  REIKI treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit. Wonderful feelings of peace, harmony and joy can be experienced from a treatment, which can last between 15 minutes and an hour -  maybe longer if one needs it.  A treatment is done by the laying on of hands at certain points around the body (or if the person wishes, just above). 

 
The world of REIKI has shown me that my fears were unfounded.  Indeed the practitioners I have encountered are from all walks of life and their sole purpose is to heal all people and creatures of this world. Is there anything wrong with that?

Just for today, I will let go of anger.

Just for today, I will let go of worry.

Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.

Just for today, I will do my work honestly.

Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbour and every living thing.

It is as much of a struggle to uphold these ideals as it is to follow the Ten Commandments, and some are better at it than others!
